FAQs

End of Life & Replacements

It means the manufacturer has announced it will stop making and selling a product. The hardware doesn’t stop working on that date, and support usually continues for several more years. It’s the signal to start planning a replacement.

These are three stages, usually in this order:

  • End of life is the announcement that a product is being discontinued.
  • End of sale is the last day you can order it from the manufacturer.
  • End of service life (EOSL) is the last day the manufacturer offers any support, including repairs, replacement parts and software updates.

Brands don’t all use these terms the same way, so check the dates in each notice rather than relying on the labels.

Yes. Equipment still under support after its EOL announcement is generally safe to keep running. The real cut-off is the end of service life date, because after that you won’t get security fixes, firmware updates or warranty repairs from the manufacturer.

The biggest risk is security. New vulnerabilities are found all the time, and unsupported switches, firewalls and servers stop getting patches. Some industries, such as healthcare and finance, also require supported equipment to pass audits. And when an unsupported device fails, replacement parts get harder to find and repairs take longer.

Manufacturers publish lifecycle notices on their support websites. If you’d rather not search through them yourself, call us at (315) 930-4535 or email sales@buyitsolutions.com with the part numbers. We’ll check the official notices and tell you where each product stands.

Yes. Send us a spreadsheet or list of part numbers, and we’ll go through it with you on a call. We’ll flag what is already past end of service life, what is coming up soon, and what has years of support left.

Yes. Tell us the model you’re replacing and how you use it. We’ll suggest current models that fit your setup and budget, from the same brand or another one.

Sometimes. After a product reaches end of sale, distributors often still have stock for a while. We’ll check what’s left across our distribution channels. We only sell new, factory-sealed hardware, so once distributor stock runs out we’ll help you find a current replacement instead.

Start planning when the end-of-life announcement comes out, and aim to have the replacement installed well before the end of service life date. The gap between the two varies by manufacturer and product, so check the dates for each item. Planning early also lets you spread the cost over more than one budget year.

We can look up lifecycle dates for the networking, server, storage, and security brands we sell. If you’re not sure whether we cover a brand, call us and ask.
